If you are new to St. Augustine’s or are considering attending services, consider yourself very welcome. There is no immediate need to introduce yourself, so take your time. But when you’re ready, take note of the Welcome Table in the Narthex (lobby) of the church on Sunday mornings. On most Sundays one or two people will be standing there, eager to meet you. On the other hand, feel free to slip into a pew and enjoy the service – you will see a “welcome card” that you can fill out to introduce yourself.

What to expect

The worship at St. Augustine’s follows a liturgical format that corresponds with an annual cycle of scripture and colours. This same cycle is followed by Anglican churches all over the world.

We hold four regularly scheduled worship services every week, each of them quite distinct. As you enter the church for the 10 a.m. Sunday service you will receive a bulletin (or service booklet) which you’ll use to follow the liturgy.

On Tuesday mornings at 8:30 we hold Morning Prayer downstairs in the Crypt. This liturgy is the first of the day within the Daily Office, and allows us to greet the new day that God has made and dedicate ourselves to Him.

On Thursday mornings at 9:30 we celebrate Holy Communion in the chapel. This is a spoken service, with prayers and readings taken from the Book of Common Prayer. Thomas Cranmer, who compiled the BCP in the 16th century, would be delighted at how faithfully we follow his liturgy.

Our 8:00 Sunday morning service has a lovely meditative quality. Like Thursday morning, this is a spoken service taken from the BCP, but we use the same readings as the 10:00 a.m. service, from the Revised Common Lectionary.

The 10:00 a.m. Sunday service is usually a Holy Eucharist and our largest gathering, featuring a variety of music, liturgies and preaching throughout the year. Our Senior Choir regularly leads our congregational hymns and sings an anthem following the sermon. We also have smaller groups of musicians that lead more contemporary songs at times during this service, as well as numerous musicians who offer their instrumental and vocal talents throughout the year. We offer a well-run Sunday School and nursery during this service. After the service you are invited to join us for coffee and snacks downstairs in the area below the church called the Crypt.

Membership

If you are a baptized Christian, attend services at St. Augustine’s, and receive Holy Communion regularly, then you are considered a ‘member’ of St. Augustine’s. This allows you to sign the voting declaration and have a voice and vote at our Annual Meeting of Parishioners. To get on the parish list, talk to one of the greeters at our Welcome Table, or contact the church office (403) 327-3970. There is a form for you to fill out so we can have some necessary information and, most of all, so we can be in touch with you.
